What Is the Difference Between a CEX and a DEX?
fomoFebruary 19, 2026
CEX stands for centralized exchange (like Coinbase or Binance), and DEX stands for decentralized exchange (like Uniswap or Raydium). They're both places to trade crypto, but they work in fundamentally different ways and offer different trade-offs.
Centralized Exchanges (CEX)
- How they work - A company operates the exchange, holds your funds, and matches buyers with sellers through an order book
- KYC required - Most CEXes require identity verification before you can trade
- Limited token selection - Only tokens that pass the exchange's listing process are available. New memecoins typically aren't listed
- Fiat on-ramps - Easy to deposit and withdraw traditional currency
- Custody risk - The exchange holds your crypto, meaning you're trusting them with your funds
Decentralized Exchanges (DEX)
- How they work - Smart contracts on a blockchain automatically facilitate trades through liquidity pools, with no central company involved
- No KYC - Anyone with a crypto wallet can trade without identity verification
- Unlimited token selection - Any token that exists on the blockchain can be traded, including brand-new launches
- Self-custody - You control your own wallet and keys. No one else can freeze or seize your funds
- Complexity - Requires wallet setup, understanding gas fees, and managing your own security
Key Trade-offs
- Token access - DEXes win here. If you want to trade new memecoins and emerging tokens, CEXes simply don't list them
- Ease of use - CEXes are generally easier for beginners with familiar interfaces and customer support
- Speed - CEXes can be faster for order matching, but DEXes on fast chains like Solana are comparable
- Fees - Varies. CEXes charge trading fees, DEXes charge swap fees plus gas. Both are typically small
- Security model - CEXes can be hacked (and have been). DEXes rely on smart contract security, which has its own risks
